The two roads
Fast or beautiful
There are two main roads from Amman to Petra, and they suit different trips. The Desert Highway is the fast, direct route — about 250 km and roughly three hours of easy driving, mostly through open desert. It is the right choice if you just want to get to Petra, especially for a day trip.
The King’s Highway is the ancient scenic route that dips down through the central highlands. It is slower — allow a full day with stops — but it passes Madaba (the mosaic city), Mount Nebo (where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land), the Crusader castle at Karak, and the Dana Biosphere Reserve. If you have the time, this is one of the great drives of the Middle East, and it turns the transfer into a day of sightseeing in itself.

How to travel
Your options
Private transfer or tour
The most flexible and comfortable option, and the one we arrange for most of our travelers. A private driver picks you up at your Amman hotel, takes the route you choose, and can wait or return on your schedule. For a day trip, an early 6:30 AM departure via the Desert Highway gets you to Petra by about 9:30 — see our one-day plan. For a multi-day trip, the King’s Highway turns the journey into part of the experience.
Public bus
The JETT bus runs daily from Amman to Wadi Musa, taking about three and a half hours. It is affordable and reliable but inflexible — you travel on its schedule, not yours, and you miss the scenic stops. Fine for independent travelers on a budget; less ideal if you want to see anything along the way.
Rental car
Driving yourself is straightforward — Jordanian roads are generally good and signposted to Petra. The Desert Highway is an easy drive; the King’s Highway is more demanding in places but very rewarding. Just factor in parking in Wadi Musa and the cost of a one-way or multi-day rental.
Day trip or overnight?
The honest recommendation
A day trip from Amman is possible and many people do it, but it is a long day — roughly seven hours of driving for a few hours on site, and you will arrive after the best morning light. If Petra is a once-in-a-lifetime visit, we strongly recommend staying at least one night in Wadi Musa. It lets you enter at opening, see the site properly, and spread the walking over two days instead of cramming it into one exhausted afternoon.
The compromise that often works best: drive down one afternoon via the King’s Highway with stops, overnight in Wadi Musa, spend a full day at Petra, and drive back to Amman the next evening on the fast Desert Highway. You get the scenery, the early start, and a reasonable pace.
